Checking in with Zach Railey

Finn sailor Zach Railey has seen a few things while going this far with the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. For one, he saw every journalist's slamdunk brother-sister story of the year go up in smoke when world female Sailor of the Year Paige Railey didn't make the team. For another, he went from high-place finishes in lead-up regattas to tanking the Finn class Worlds. But there's a reason why this 23-year-old first-generation sailor can wrap it all up in a kit bag and smile. MORE...

What's New at Dusseldorf?
If you want to go to big—I mean really big, as in a couple of thousand watercraft—boat shows, you have to go to Europe. On the other side of the pond January's the hot month for big winter boat shows, with London and Dusseldorf competing for the attentions of the overseas visitor. Dusseldorf's location a couple of hours' drive from the nearest coast might not make it an obvious choice for a boat show, but it's easy to get to by road, air and water—the mighty Rhine flows right past the Messe. GEAR REVIEW
Tuff Love
In 2006, Schaefer Marine released the Aero Tuff Luff (model A-1706) headstay foil, which fit forestays up to 5/16" in diameter. Now Schaefer has introduced a 2.0 version of the Aero Tuff Luff (model A-2506) for boats with headstays up to 3/8" in diameter. The twin-track foil is made from a super-strong polycarbonate material and features a fine surface finish to help mitigate friction between the track and a sail's boltrope. Its teardrop shape purportedly increases lift by 9 percent. From $920, depending on length. Schaefer Marine. MORE GEAR...
